Clive Aston
MA (Cantab)

Full Member, LMAA Committee

Clive Aston studied Law at Trinity College, Cambridge where he was awarded the Lizette Bentwich Prize for Law.

After obtaining his degree at Cambridge he qualified as a Barrister-at-Law. Rather than practise at the bar, he went directly into the shipping field, working at Steamship Mutual P&I Club between 1979 and 1988.

In 1988 Clive Aston established his own maritime consultancy practice. At the same time he began accepting arbitration appointments and has since acted as arbitrator in a wide range of maritime and commercial disputes. Since 1998 he has had separate spells as a Committee Member of the LMAA and has been involved in developing the LMAA's mediation terms and in the drafting of the LMAA/BIMCO dispute resolution clause for contracts.

Clive has travelled widely on behalf of the LMAA and made many presentations on subjects relating to LMAA arbitration and is a member of the LMAA Supporting Members Liaison Committee and LMAA Supporting Members Liaison Committee (Asia Pacific).

Clive Aston is a qualified mediator, Member of the Baltic Exchange and listed Panel Member of the China Maritime Arbitration Commission, the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.

President of the LMAA 2014-2017.

As President of the LMAA Clive oversaw the drafting and introduction of the LMAA Terms 2017.
