Maritime Arbitration Salon [workshop] - "Chinese parties’ experience in London Maritime Arbitration and Litigation", Beijing.

Ian Gaunt, president of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association has attended a Maritime Arbitration Salon sponsored by the China Maritime Arbitration Commission ("CMAC") the event titled: "Chinese parties' experience in London Maritime Arbitration and Litigation" took place in Beijing on 26 February.

The Maritime Arbitration Salon was part of a visit to the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), and more than 50 representatives from shipping companies, universities, law firms, insurance companies and other related organisations took part.

Li Hu, secretary of the Party Committee/deputy secretary of CIETAC met with Ian Gaunt, and they discussed CIETAC business development in 2018, as well as the appointment, training and daily case handling of arbitrators. Both parties agreed to strengthen cooperation and exchanges between the institutions and to jointly promote arbitration and the provision of quality services. 

Mr Gaunt also spoke as part of a panel discussion at the BIMCO Conference in Shanghai.  In discussion, the panelists all agreed that Brexit would not impact London arbitration and London would continue to be the leading seat of choice for maritime arbitration for the foreseeable future, despite potential growth in Singapore and Hong Kong.
